When visiting Spain the must-eat dish is of course the Spanish tapas! Tapas in a nutshell is a wide variety of appetizers and snacks. Tapas can be surprisingly filling and it can be enjoyed as lunch or dinner, also a lot of times it is enjoyed as an appetizer. Tapas can be as simple as a bowl of olives or slices of Serrano ham but also some of the greatest tapas restaurants have come up with more creative tapas with a peculiar touch.
The history of tapas is quite interesting and it has its roots in Andalucia, Spain. Tapa is translated in English as cover and it was born when the Spanish king Alfonso, the 10th had to take small bites of food with some wine between meals because of his illness. And once he was recovered he said that wine can’t be served without a small bite of food. It was a wise precaution to counteract the adverse effects of alcohol on those people who didn’t have enough money to buy a nourishing meal and drank alcohol on an empty stomach.
