Holy week, in Spanish Semana Santa is here. Since Spain is a Catholic country there are many occasions and holidays that are celebrated during the Easter holiday. Semana Santa in Barcelona is incredible due to the numerous outdoor processions and celebrations taking place in the city.
Holy Week (29.3-4.4) starts with the Palm Sunday, when a procession traditionally takes place around the Cathedral of Barcelona where people are holding palm branches.
The following week the Semana Santa continues with Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Easter Friday is a public holiday in Spain and most of the shops, restaurants, museums and other attractions will close their doors. On Friday from 16:00-23:00 it is highly recommended to visit the square outside of the Barcelona Cathedral, there will be processions and celebrations.
On the next day, Easter Saturday everything runs normally and usually all the shops are full of people due to the fact that most of the stores are closed for the next few days. On Easter Sunday there are a lot of masses and religious processions, throughout the day and everywhere in the city. Once again the Cathedral is the place to be since it is the center of all the activities. Easter Monday is a public holiday as well and usually almost everything is closed. You can see the Easter opening hours here.
During Semana Santa Barcelona is breathtakingly beautiful and the city has a tradition of producing and consuming huge amounts of chocolate during the Easter. Chocolate shops as well as bakeries will display different kind of sculptures made out of chocolates, the best chocolate sculptures can be in the Chocolate Museum; Museu de la Xocolata located in the district of Born.
We wish everybody Happy Easter!
